Shay Stafford - Memoirs of a Showgirl
It's quite a journey from taking ballet classes in Brisbane to being a celebrated Paris showgirl.
In her autobiography, Memoirs of a Showgirl, dancer Shay Stafford pulls back the curtain to take readers backstage at the Moulin Rouge and Lido to discover what it's really like to tread the boards of the world's most famous cabarets.
Shay details the highs and lows, the loves and temptations and the close encounters with the rich and famous in this remarkable account of a most extraordinary life.
Readers are given a glimpse of the grind behind the glamour and learn that beyond its sparkling fa?ade, not everything that glitters in the modern showgirl's life is gold.
The rich history of the Moulin Rouge and Lido is recounted as is the cautionary tale of how a stunning city's seedy underbelly routinely seduces vulnerable young ingenues.
After 12 years at the Moulin Rouge and Lido, Shay has seen it all. She details her transformation from a single woman making the most of the extraordinary Parisienne nightlife to a happily married mother of two.
See Paris through Shay's eyes. The view over the Seine from the back of a Vespa, the backstage dramas, the loneliness of a life far from home, the excitement of living your dream plus the high melodrama of French love affairs are all told in Shay's wonderfully warm and honest voice.
She brilliantly captures the journey from the ordinariness of Australian suburban
life to the glittering highs of the Paris stage, as well as showcasing the grit and determination needed to carve a successful career in dancing.

MOULIN ROUGE
Dancers from the Moulin Rouge Paris were on hand last night to celebrate the opening of the new Make Up For Ever store inside Sephora at the Venetian Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The store is one of three exclusive boutiques opening this month in the U.S. by the French company. The ladies of the Moulin Rouge performed and posed for pictures with party guests. In conjunction with the opening, Make Up For Ever launched the Moulin Rouge Collection, including lashes, lipstick, swarovski crystal strass and gloss inspired by the girls of the famous cabaret.
The 600 square foot store is modeled like the backstage of a fashion show. Visitors to the store will have access to iPads to view Make UpFor Ever how-to-videos, showcased looks and social networking. They can also use a touch screen to create customized looks or consult one of the make up artists trained by the Make Up For Ever Academy in Paris. The collection includes more than 1200 products including a Lash Bar containing an extensive collection of full and partial lashes. To celebrate the opening this weekend, Sephora guests can indulge in free lip and eye makeovers.
Make Up For Ever was developed in 1984 by Dany Sanz in Paris. She used her background as a sculptor and artist to create products for use in fashion and the theater. Her products are easy to use and long lasting, necessities for women of the theater who often apply their own makeup.

Historic burlesque venues in Paris!
At the peak of Parisienne bohemian splendour in the 19th century, the opulent tableaux vivants (living pictures) at the Moulin Rouge gave way to the lavish theatrical Grande Revues at the music hall Casino de Paris, which still stands at Rue De Clichy, and Folies Bergere, at Rue Richer.
These shows were the height of risqué, where you could see courtesans perform in negligible lingerie, and became the scandal of the world.
By WWII, many of the theatres had been closed, but in the post-war era Paris did have one glamorous HQ: The Crazy Horse Saloon.
The Crazy Horse still stands with a regular “nude revue”, and you’ll still see costumes covered with feathers and crystals at the Moulin Rouge and other authentic venues, such as Lido.
Built in 1889, Le Moulin Rouge’s decor still retains its original grandeur today. For information about touring the venue, see moulinrouge.fr.
